  Thallus whitish grey to pale grey-green, thin, effuse, spreading, rarely with diffuse patchy soralia; lobules absent. Apothecia common and dispersed over the thallus, sessile, constricted at the base, 0.4–2.0 mm wide; disc vivid orange, ±plane, often with yellow-orange pruina; margin prominent, rather fragile, vivid orange. Exciple biatorine, penetrated by orange crystals; medullary layer colourless or indistinct. Hymenium colourless, 120–150 μm thick. Hypothecium colourless to pale brown. Asci 85–110 × 30–45 μm. Ascospores 65–105 × 22–40 μm. Spore-borne microconidia frequently present. Pycnidia globose to ovate, 50–100 μm wide. Conidia 3–4 × c. 1 μm.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus K+ yellow, C–, P–; apothecia K+ reddish purple; apothecial sections, exciple and epihymenium K+ carmine; thallus containing atranorin, zeorin, ±traces of other triterpenes; apothecia containing parietin.
     
  Known from Qld where it is rare on the bark of trees. A common, pantropical-subtropical species in Africa, North, Central and South America; very rare in Asia, Christmas Island and Papua New Guinea.
